Why we started using Pooch & Mutt Bionic Biotic Health Supplement for Dogs

Like with most dogs, but certainly with Border as they adore food, a few years ago Indy started experiencing colitis. We mentioned this to Indy’s vet and for a period of time we started giving Indy a lighter meal of boiled rice and chicken. Indy loved it, but the colitis did not improve and every so often Indy would show relapses. I then started searching online for ways on how to improve the digestion system in dogs, and came across Pooch & Mutt products on Amazon. Dare I say this is by far the best dog supplement available over the counter, as it solved the problem for Indy’s sensitive tummy once and for all.

The story behind Pooch & Mutt

You will find the story of Pooch & Mutt nicely presented on Amazon. I shall not bore you with the details, other than to say the creator of this brand, Guy Bluskey, started working with manufacturers of horse joint supplements after his dog Cookie was treated from symptoms of hip dysplasia.

Guy was so impressed by the natural ingredients that contributed to improve his dog’s condition, that he decided to launch the same natural based supplements for dogs.

Pooch & Mutt was welcomed so overwhelmingly by dog owners after they witnessed the good effect, that the brand went onto winning numerous accolades, which encouraged Guy to further develop his business in the creation of tailored-made food.

Indy has never needed to try Pooch & Mutt food, just for the simple reason that the Biotic Bionic Health Supplements are really good and have solved all his digestion related problems.

Good ingredients

I must admit, when I first read about this supplement, the ‘bionic’ word did raise concerns in my head as to whether this powder was made up solely of chemical based ingredients. How could a product be bionic and biotic at the same time?

You can view a full list of all the ingredients contained in this health supplement directly on the Amazon page. But from an initial glance, it appears to me that this product is a concentration of probiotic components that re balance the good flora in your dog’s intestine.

Yes, admittedly one of the main selling points of this supplement is that it gets rid of itchiness and redness in your dog’s skin. But Indy found it particularly beneficial to his stools and to regain a healthy digestion.

Who benefits from Pooch & Mutt Bionic Biotic Health Supplement for Dogs

Indy never had particular skin problem, but as I mentioned, it was his poor digestion that lead me to find this supplement.

The signs of colitis in a dog are easily recognizable as your dog will start stretching during walks or whilst being active indoors. The type of stretching given by colitis is different from the stretching dogs do when they wake up – a bad tummy stretch will be much slower, where your dog pushes to the front and literally freezes for a few seconds, as if he was about to have a seizure (but not as bad and scary).

Within a few weeks of Indy taking a small scoop of this supplement, his guts stopped playing up completely.

But it is also true that this supplement may have benefited Indy’s coat without us realizing this. What we have noticed is that, particularly after his recent surgery to remove his cancer, where the surgeon had to shave a big patch of coat on his back by the tail, Indy’s fur grew back as nice and healthy as it has always been. This may have been due to the supplement that Indy has been taking every day for the last 4 years.

This particularly Pooch & Mutt Health Supplement for Dogs is also particularly indicated to strengthen your dog’s immune system, thanks to probiotic and prebiotic ingredients and to iron and omega 3 and 6 components contained in the powder. Again, Indy has had many surgeries due to his bad teeth and to his recent cancer, but otherwise he has been a sturdy dog in his 13 years of life, and has never complained of ordinary ailments. I believe this supplement has contributed to his strong disposition.

Very reasonable price

Currently Pooch & Mutt Health Supplement for Dogs retails at approximately £8 for a 200g packet. Given Indy’s weight of no more than 8kg, all I have to use is a small sprinkle of powder on his dinner once a day, which makes the 200g packet last literally forever.

The ratio will vary, naturally, depending on your dog’s size. But Pooch & Mutt recommend that this supplement be given on its own. What they mean is that, as this type of supplement is so rich in vitamins, no other supplement is required. And that’s where the price becomes even more reasonable.

Like with everything, there are negatives

You may notice in the list of ingredients that gluten is included. I have spoken so much in the past about concerns by dog owners of dogs suffering from gluten intolerance or even from Spike’s Disease, which is deemed to be managed very much through a gluten free diet. Well, it appears that Pooch & Mutt have also created a gluten-free dog food range which is highly recommended for dogs who cannot have grain.

Nevertheless, this particular type of supplements does not come in a gluten-free version. Which is a shame for all those hounds who are sadly affected when ingesting gluten.

Possibly the other negative aspect of this product is that it comes with no serving scoop or spoon. The indications suggest that we should use a table spoon to dish the powder in our dog’s dish, but again this still leaves open interpretation as to how much to feed our dog daily, as different spoons can have a different volume.

In fairness, I do not feed Indy the recommended dosage of 1 table spoon, as by sprinkling the powder over his dinner, I give him much less. However even the reduced quantity helps him with regular and healthy stools.

My verdict

So, why are Indy and I giving this health supplement a big 5 out 5?

I hear from friends and family that often their dogs have very sensitive tummies, to the point that they regularly throw up and struggle to keep their food down. I hear the owners trying their dogs on different diets all the times, in the hope that their dogs may be more tolerant of certain foods over others.

Indy was like that to start off with. And even after he had his teeth removed due to severe gum disease, his tummy kept playing up. But it was only after he started taking this health supplement that his tummy has completely settled down. No more stretching, no more dodgy tummy!

Given the very competitive price of this product, my word of advice is to make this health supplement regular part of your dog’s main meal, and to sprinkle it on his or her food every day.

Pooch & Mutt grain-free food

The only warning I would give is to use with caution if you suspect your dog may suffer from gluten intolerance.

It is a shame that Pooch & Mutt have not thought of creating a gluten-free supplement in this respect. On the other hand, once you have identified that your dog is intolerant to gluten and grains, it is safe to assume that a gluten-free diet will make his or her digestive system work much better, and that your dog’s dodgy tummy spells will decrease noticeably. And Pooch & Mutt have addressed this issue by making available to Amazon their grain free dry food.

For all these reasons, Pooch & Mutt Bionic Biotic Health Supplement for Dogs gets a full thumbs up from us. So, what are you waiting for, try it on your dog, You won’t regret the expense!!!

    Hi Giulia,

A very informative review I must say. I am glad that your dog’s health and skin has improved after taking this probiotic supplement.

I am curious whether it will cure the redness that is left after a dog has suffered from mange? I used to live in the country and had a dog that suffered from mange. He was prescribed many things but nothing works.

I know that this supplement wouldn’t get rid of the mites and ticks, but what about the redness. Id like to know because my parents still live in the country and if their dogs suffered from mange then at least they have this to help the dogs skin.

Owain, thank you for raising the issue. I might search more about mange, and write a separate post on the issue. However, if you suspect that your parents’dog might have mange, the first port of call should be for them to take the dog to the vet, so that they can run tests on your dog and identify which type of mange affects the dog. The vet is likely to prescribe medications and soothing baths for your dog.
I am sure, however, that Pooch & Mutt Health Supplement For Dogs will help in soothing the redness and the itchiness. For this reason I recommend that they start using the supplement by adding it to their dog’s main meal every day.

    Hi Giulia,
I am so glad you found a great natural supplement to fix your boy’s colitis. My cat has digestion problems. Do you know if this brand makes any cat supplements?

I have tried many things and have not found the perfect solution for him yet. We found a great food that is a vast improvement since he had food intolorances. I have tried other things as well but it is frustrating not to find something that works all the way.

These kinds of digestion problems seem very common in both dogs and cats.
    Thanks for this great information,

Oh dear, Jessica, I am ever so sorry to hear your cat suffers from bad tummy. Pooch & Mutt are specialised in health supplement and food for dogs primarily. On Amazon I have found the Pooch & Mutt Salmon Oil for dogs and cats, but it is aimed to improved cardio vascular issues, memory and brain functions, as well as maintaining cats’ coat and strengthening their immune system. You may want to try it – it is not expensive at all, currently at just over £11 for a 500ml bottle and apparently very palatable to fur ones.
Let us know how you get on, Jessica. Do drop a line back if you decide to try this product, or if you find some other supplement which is more targeted. Thank you 🙂

    Hi there!

I am currently living with a dog and that made it finally very clear that I wan´t to own a dog in the near future and I´m glad I found your website.

I am still totally new but constantly consuming informations and glad I found your website.

Is this supplement something that is always good for my dog or is it only to be considered when I see problems of any kind?

I mean, it can´t be bad really but maybe it´s always simply not necessary as long as my dog feels good?

Also, any suggestions how I can find out if my dog might be intolerant against gluten?

Thanks very much! By the time I know how my future living situation will be like, I am taking a closer look into the different races!

    Have a good one 🙂

Manny, starting from the bottom, I know I am bias, but I really can’t help it: do look into Borders. They are really one of the most adaptable breeds, with a distinct personality and generally speaking, problem free from behavioural as well as health point of view. You may have read about my articles on Spike’s Disease or Cecs, but these are still in a minority of cases, and I would not want in the least to put you off from considering this breed at all. Have you considered adopting?

I started giving Pooch & Mutt probiotic supplements to Indy as a preventative measure, in the same way as I would do it for myself. You start taking probiotic drinkable yoghurt to maintain your intestinal flora healthy.  You can do the same with dogs.

Likewise, with dogs you find out if they are intolerant to gluten in the same was as with humans. If they start developing symptoms, the vet will consider as a possible option gluten intolerance and work from there, possibly by asking you to change your hound’s diet to see if the symptoms go away.

I hope you will come back to my website soon, for more info on Borders and on dogs more in genera. In the meantime, if you need any help, give me a shout 🙂
