Why you should adopt a dog
Naturally the choice is yours, and I’m far from condemning those potential dog owners that prefer to purchase their canine friends. Provided you are sure you are dealing with registered breeders from The Kennel Club UK, by purchasing a dog you will retain dog breed choice, hence you will be able to go for that dog with those specific personality traits.
So what are the benefits of adopting a dog? Firstly, you give a homeless dog a family and a stable home. From expense point of view, adopting if far cheaper, as the rescue centre will only ask for a donation and will have taken care of all the initial vet expenses. And yes, not always you may be able to get the breed of your choice, or a puppy – but if the dog is adult, the rescue centre would have ensured he/she will be fully trained and mostly they will be suitable for your home environment, i.e. with children, older household, can be left on his/her own for a few hours due to work commitments.
May I spend my last few words in this post for the Border Terrier Welfare UK, who do a magnificent job of rehoming homeless Borders to their best environment. We tried to adopt Olive from them just before Christmas, but it turned out that our Indy is far too grumpy to bear the thought of sharing his toys with any other dogs, and the adoption could not go ahead in the end. But Borter Terrier UK were brilliant in finding the bitch so promptly ( heart breaking to know there are so many homeless dogs!) and in taking her back from us equally fast in order not to create the unbalance.
